Fixing a boring outdoor short

There is no one answer to fixing up a shot that could have, should have, didn't work. Here is a simple sequence using some of the tools available to tweak up this particular shot.

Original shot is boring, colourless and featureless.

Push up the colours with the Hue/Saturation/Lightness control (Shift-H) Bring up the saturation level to add colour.

Now sharpen the image, use the "unsharp mask" (rather oddly named I know). The unsharp mask gives a more natural effect on pictures, as well as greater control.

Next bump up the contrast

Finally, skies are always dull (usually just too white). Select the sky area and hand paint, with a very low opacity brush and some clouds texture.

Dull original again for comparison

Notes:

Again, with photographic images, working at a small size tends to exagerate the effects and we want to show the effect off strongly as well. In real work, use an image with greater resolution and keep a relatively light hand on the tweaks.
