PSP Basics - Creating Soft Focus

Step 1:

  1. Take your original image
  2. Copy the whole image and paste it back as a new layer (Ctrl-C and Ctrl-L)

Step 2:

  1. Apply a fairly heavy gaussian blur to the new layer

The image produced will be too blurred for use.

You should use gaussian blur here, rather than any other blurs, since gaussian blur follows a mathematical model which approximates what happens when things go out of focus! So highlights tend to shine through above dark areas.

Step 3:

  1. Adjust the opacity of the top layer to taste. This is about 50% opacity just to exaggerate the effect. You will probably want to use a lower opacity.
