Step 1:
- Take your original image
- Copy the whole image and paste it back as a new layer (Ctrl-C and Ctrl-L)
Step 2:
- Apply a fairly heavy gaussian blur to the new layer
The image produced will be too blurred for use.
You should use gaussian blur here, rather than any other blurs, since
gaussian blur follows a mathematical model which approximates what happens
when things go out of focus! So highlights tend to shine through above
dark areas.
Step 3:
- Adjust the opacity of the top layer to taste. This is about 50% opacity
just to exaggerate the effect. You will probably want to use a lower opacity.
