Controlling Brightness with Layers

You often need to adjust the brightness of an image, but I find that using the gamma correction or Brightness/Contrast controls unwieldy for this purpose. Here is a dead quick way to get to where your going, that gives you maximum flexibility.

Step 1:

  1. OK, I've got a tiled image, but its too dark to actually use on a web page because it just clutters up the background and has too many light/dark contrasts
  2. So, add a new layer
  3. Fill with white
  4. Adjust the opacity till you get what you want

Variations:

  1. Off course, the same thing works in reverse, you want to darken an image, fill with black and adjust opacity.
  2. Finally, there is nothing to stop you using different kinds of control layers here. This example uses a vignette type layer. Which is clear in the centre, fading to white at the edges.
