Blurred and Bound

A while ago a photographer called David Levinthal produced a fascinating series of photo's. They depicted disfigured models in various scenes of love and dominance.

The figures were warmly lit, yet deliberately out of focus, producing a soft, loving appearance. Yet, despite their inherent sensuality there was something slightly odd about the look of these figures.

The answer comes in knowing that Levinthal's models were just that, various versions of Barbie dressed in specially made clothing. Often using just spare parts, not even whole figures.

Technique:

My model was a human being, but that didn't put me off!

The image is of course heavily blurred, with repeated applications of Gaussian blur to create the correct impression of soft focus photographer.

The overall scene was worked on to produce a warm appearance with both colour filters applied as well as use of blend layers to create the warmth.

Personally, I feel this was the best of a series I made, but they came nowhere near to the surreal and disturbing quality of Levinthals' inspiration.
