Angel | ||
I am fascinated by the place of angels in our
mythology. There is always a deep paradox to me
that they should have come to such a fore in the
Victorian era when sexuality was so forbidden, yet
their nakedness was always clear and explicit.
There is also an implicit sexuality, starting with Gabriel and Mary, but leading through so many works of the Renaissance and beyond with cupids and angels tending to voluptuous women in a way that can only be described as sensual. Technique: One of the problems with angels as that to be on the same sort of scale as a bird the wings need to be about 40 feet across! This tends to make either an bizarre composition or a angel that definitely looks underpowered! So many angel pictures avoid this by showing the wings folded, where they could actually be of any length. In this case the wings are actually a warped version of the original subject, the tips of the wings are actually her feet.
