For the purposes of this exercise, I decided simply to change the messy kitchen to sepia, but bear in mind that you can make whatever kinds of changes you want, for example you could blur it, make a sketch effect, etc. The main thing you need to know is that this is the changed layer.
So the next steps are: - Duplicate the background - On the duplicate, do Effects-Artistic Effects-Sepia Toning, using the default settings. At this point, your Layers Palette will show just two layers, Background and Copy of Background. Simple enough. - Hover your cursor over the Copy of Background in the Layers Palette, so that you can see the thumbnail. Get used to doing that.
