Download this brick texture (bricktex.gif):
Open bricktex.gif in PSP.
File-New. Width 400, Height 300, Background color doesn't matter, Image type 16.7 Million Colors (24-bit).
Select the flood fill tool. On the Tool Options palette, left tab, choose Fill Type: Pattern, Blend Mode: Normal, Paper Texture: None, and Match Mode: None. On the center tab, choose "bricktex.gif" under "New Pattern Source."
Flood fill your new image.
Do Image-Other-Emboss.
Colors-Colorize. Hue 3, Saturation 128. Then Image-Mirror (this gets the "light" shining from the standard top left position).
Now, the clever bit:
Layers-Duplicate.
Select the "Magic Wand" tool. On the Tool Options palette, set "Match Mode" to "RGB Value" and set "Tolerance" and "Feather" to 0. "Sample merged" should not be checked.
With the upper layer active, click in the center of one of the bricks (to select the large rectangle in the middle of the brick; see picture).
Selections-Modify-Select Similar. Now the centers of all the bricks should be selected.
Edit-Clear.
Selections-Select None.
Activate your background (bottom) layer.
Layers-New Raster Layer. Leave everything at the defaults.
Make sure your new layer is active.
Now, put whatever you want on your new layer. The top layer will make it show up only on the "brick," and not on the "mortar."
